About Colognole

Colognole, as a location in Chianti Rufina, has literally been on the map since the Middle Ages, when the military tower— now part of the Conti Spalleti Trivelli family’s estate home— was built. As a farm estate, it’s belonged to the family since 1892. Cesare, along with brother Mario, are the 6th generation to run this historic and significant wine estate.

Located about 15mi west of Florence, the vineyards climb the right bank of the Sieve river (the Sieve Valley runs north-south) at altitudes ranging from 250 to 520 meters above sea level, on terroir of slate-like rock with negligible topsoils in the upper vineyards (650m), and with galestro and white clays lower down (400m). It is great dirt for vines, but it is the altitude that makes these wines unique; long sunny days and cold nights mean the grapes mature slowly and each berry holds its acidity and it is this balance of tannin, sugar and acidity that gives this wine such aging potential.

Colognole wines are the archetype for high-altitude sangiovese, showing great finesse and elegance in the aromas combined with a marked longevity due, in particular, to the presence of abundant tannins.
